The hottest day of the year prompted a huge spike in deaths, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has confirmed, in the first evidence showing the lethal impact of warming temperatures.

Britain experienced its warmest day since records began in July 25, when temperatures soared to 101.6F (38.7C) in Cambridge.

Figures from the ONS show there were 1,473 deaths on July 25 registered in England and Wales, rising from about 1,100-1,200 deaths per day around the same time.

However averages for the summer have remained roughly consistent since 2013, leading experts to believe heatwaves shorten the lives of those with pre-existing conditions who may have died weeks or months later were it not for…
