Therefore, if you notice that your company’s star is not performing as well as you expect, you need to feel alarmed about it. Find a way to encourage this person to excel again through these tips.

Talk to the employee privately

Something might have happened in the past that led the employee to shut down and not perform well. It could be an altercation with another employee. It could be negative feedback on a previous project. Regardless of the reason, it is crucial for you to be there and have a conversation. You will solve this problem if you know why it exists in the first place. Do not blame the other employees who caused friction, but find a way for both parties to resolve their differences.

Be objective and fair

During the conversation, you might realise that you are the reason why the said employee is not doing well anymore. Even if it hurts, you need to stay objective. Listen to what your employee tells you and acknowledge your mistake. If it involves other employees, you cannot accuse the other party of being wrong. You need to hear both sides first before you make judgments. The goal is to resolve the problem and not to make relationships worse.

Be expressive in your gratitude

You might have someone who does everything to impress you. Yes, you felt impressed, but you did not do anything to show it. Some people want to hear what you have to say about their performance. If this employee looks up to you, it is crucial to say what you feel. You do not even have to offer monetary rewards to express your appreciation. A simple thank you will suffice.

Consider changing tasks

Some employees reach a point of burning out. It does not show that this employee is underperforming, but the job might not be satisfying anymore. The star might already have reached the peak of success and has no other motivation to excel. Changing tasks could be a challenge that will spark that energy and bring the employee’s interest back to life. Talk to the person and open up this idea. You can work together to determine the next step.

Be a mentor

You might think that the employees who are doing an excellent job are confident, but some of them are not. They are only putting on a face to appear confident. You need to be there as a mentor for your employees because they need you. Hearing your ideas, suggestions and feedback will encourage them to work hard. Make sure though that you do not micromanage since most employees hate it. For instance, if you want the employee to move to the marketing department and work on an exhibition banner as the first project, you need to provide extensive guidance

Your star employee might be feeling down because you were too complacent. Even the most successful people in your team could slip if you do not help them.
