This week in the news about health (22 February 2019) we look at exercise and weight loss, young deaths in the UK from asthma and PTSD in young people.

Short bursts of exercise is good for weight loss

According to research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine which looked at c36 studies, short bursts of high intensity interval training (Hiit) may be more effective if you want to lose weight. It would appear Hiit is more effective than longer less intense workouts. It’s worth noting that all participants in the studies lost weight.  However, those who did Hiit recorded a 28.5% greater weight loss than those who did other types of exercise.

Young people in the UK more likely to die from their asthma

According to a new report, young people in the UK are more likely to die from asthma than young people in other first world countries.

The study, conducted by the Nuffield Trust think tank, said the UK is lagging behind other countries. This isn’t just with asthma, but across a number of health indicators, including obesity in teenagers.

Post traumatic stress disorder affects 1 in 13 people by the age of 18

A study published in The Lancet Psychiatry has found that one in 13 young people in England and Wales experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by the age of 18. The study looked at more than 2,000 18 year olds. It found tthat around one-third had experienced some sort of trauma in childhood.

Researchers say, that many young people are not receiving the support they need. They hope the findings act as a wake-up call for the provision of better emotional and mental health services.
