1 min pitch for what you are doing now?
I help people rethink the work that they do and the impact they can have. The stories we tell ourselves about the work we do is powerful. I use the art of storytelling to spark new ideas and inspire action, and teach leaders how to cultivate aligned, idea-driven teams that breed unstoppable creativity innovation.
How to build an innovation dream team
How was the last year, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?
The last 12 months have been phenomenal. First, I changed my physical location, moving from the US to Spain for a year. There’s nothing like taking a big leap that changes the entire cultural foundation of how you live your day-to-day life to change what you do and what you believe. Second was bringing intention and focus to the work I do. This has helped me become increasingly more productive while also giving me more free time. The free time allows me to have experiences that spark new ideas and to rethink the work I do.
As for what didn’t move as quickly, as a highly productive person to start with, I’m always impatient with my pace of learning and implementing what I’ve taken in. Part of my quest the past year was dramatically improving my Spanish. While I wouldn’t label my progress as dramatic, it did get substantially better. It’s another reminder that immersing myself with intention and focus is what brings progress quickly.
What are your plans for the future?
In addition to the Fast Forward Forum book, I’m writing another – my 10th. In it, I teach people how to look at innovation differently and follow the same process that the world’s most innovative teams use to come up with great ideas that have big business impact. I’m adding more training and consulting services around team alignment based on the six archetypes I see for highly innovative teams. I’m still working on my Spanish while spending time with my family – our oldest daughter will leave for university next year. That makes time more precious with her and our other two children. They are curious people and avid travelers. That combination always lends itself for delightful surprises.
What will you be talking about at this event?
I’ll cover how to build an innovation dream team from scratch. We have this idea that innovation teams look and act a certain way. In my research, I’ve found that the highest performing teams focus less on job titles and roles, and more on how people naturally function in the world. This has led to my development of the six archetypes every team needs to consistently deliver great, reliable and consistent ideas. Essentially, the way we look at innovation is wrong – we are focusing so much on the struggles of the process and outcomes that we miss the talent quotient.
What inspired you to attend it?
I’m fascinated by Heimo Hammer’s focus on innovation and relentless pursuit of the path of change. Last year’s conference was magical, from the uncharacteristic mix of topics to the insightful conversations. This truly is nothing like a conference and everything like a sophisticated think tank. Everyone will walk away not only thinking differently but thinking bigger and with greater inspiration.

Which influencers and websites do you follow to keep up to date with the latest developments?
I have zero monogamy when it comes to my sources of information and inspiration. I bounce between traditional news sources to specialty publications based on an industry I’m currently working in. I’ll flip from a website about wearable technology to one that’s an authority on mindfulness. I like to research people who are successful crossovers between different professions and learn how they transplanted their expertise from one area to another. That takes special skill beyond topical knowledge. Perhaps my one staple source is the Creative Minds podcast. I find it absolutely brilliant.
