New pairs of wireless earbuds seem to arrive on a weekly basis at the moment and OnePlus will be getting in on the action with the aptly named Buds.

OnePlus might be best known for its smartphones like the OnePlus 8 Pro but it also makes excellent audio products like the Bullets Wireless 2 – as well as TVs you probably can’t buy.

A move to wireless earbuds is an obvious one to rival the Apple AirPods and Samsung Galaxy Buds+, among others.

When is the OnePlus Buds release date?

It looks like tipster Max J was right when he posted an image of the headphones (above), saying that the headphones would arrive in July.

OnePlus has now confirmed that the Buds will arrive on 21 July along with the Nord smartphone. The pair will be announced by way of an AR launch event.

What will the OnePlus Buds be like?

Well the firm has not only confirmed the name, but also said they “are designed to deliver high-quality audio playback and an easy-to-use experience on the go, eliminating all wires for a truly freeing sound experience.”

The tagline is ‘Set Your Music Free’.

“With the new OnePlus Buds, we are further building out our portfolio of products that give our users a burdenless experience,” said Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus.

“Our users are looking for the right combination of great sound quality, seamless connectivity and an easy-to-use experience. That’s exactly what the OnePlus Buds will deliver.”

There’s not much leaked information out there on the OnePlus Buds but the second image posted by Max J show a design similar to rivals including the regular AirPods 2 and Huawei Freebuds 3.

And by that I mean that they don’t appear to have any kind of silicone ear tip or otherwise. Rather a sculpted plastic shape that can’t be adjusted.

Having reviewed various designs like this, it’s generally the opinion at Tech Advisor towers that this design isn’t as comfortable. No ear tip means not getting a proper seal and therefore poor noise isolation.

They do look a bit like the Oppo Enco Free, which do come with different tips, but in our testing didn’t help them much.

So it’s fingers crossed on that front. Otherwise, the sketch shows a similar design on the back of the earbud to the Bullets range featuring a red circle. There could be touch sensitive controls like rivals.

OnePlus is good at charging with the Bullets Wireless 2 having Warp Charge, so it will be interesting to see if the Buds come with any fast charging.

How much will the OnePlus Buds cost?

There’s no leaks for the price yet but considering the Bullets Wireless 2 cost £99 at launch, it’s unlikely the Buds will be the same or cheaper.

I think they’re more likely to be around £129 or £149 depending on whether they have active noise cancelling – which doesn’t seem to be the case.

This would put them around the level of the RHA TrueConnect and Sony WF-XB700.
