Before I get into telling you about Whitley Bay and what there is to do there, I need to make something clear. Whitley Bay, the seaside town on the Tyne and Wear stretch of the North Sea coastline, is not the same as Whitby, the seaside town on the Yorkshire stretch of said coastline.

Now I know this seems obvious, but people have traditionally struggled to make the distinction, and for much of the 19th century the towns received piles of each other’s post. This culminated in 1901 when – and this is God’s truth – an actual dead body, on its way to burial, was sent to Whitby rather than Whitley.
