Teambuilding activities are a powerful way to strengthen any business. By having team members focus on achieving common goals, they can improve relationships between colleagues, and thus increase communication and productivity across the board. Businesses naturally have employees with different characteristics and capabilities, and teambuilding can often help employees discover how their particular skills and tendencies might compliment those of others in the team.

Here are some top tips for organising effective team building exercises.

Find the right time

Most employees won’t mind doing any sort of teambuilding activity if they can do it during work hours. After all, they are still getting paid, and may enjoy the novelty of doing something outside of their normal day-to-day routine. They might also say yes to a weekend event, if the company pays for it, and you choose an appealing location. This could also be a company trip purely to tighten the bond between employees.

The activities need to be collaborative

You need to ensure that the specific exercises will help your team members improve collaboration in future. There might be some healthy competition along the way, but the focus should be to finish the tasks together and not winning over others. After all, once the teambuilding is over, you belong to the same team. After any activity, there needs to be a discussion session where everyone is free to share their opinions regarding what they did and any lessons they may have learned.

Look for the perfect place

If you intend to head out with the entire team, you want to find the ideal event venue, somewhere you can relax, have fun, and feel comfortable. It’s certainly an excellent idea to not stay in your office and instead opt for a change in environment. For the event to be effective and translate into improvements back at work, you need employees to let loose and be themselves, not to feel like they are still in the workplace.

Set expectations

Before you pursue your plan for a teambuilding event or activity, you need to let everyone know what the goals are, and the value of being an active part of it. However, you also need to allow for those who may have valid reasons not to attend.

Be aware of potential issues among the employees

It’s highly likely that some employees won’t get on well with each other. It might be due to professional disagreements, or simply a personality clash. You need to be aware of these things in order to avoid potentially awkward moments during your teambuilding activities. You also need to make it clear to everyone that they need to set their differences aside for the teambuilding activity. They do not need to become friends in order to work with each other effectively in consideration of the whole team.

Gather feedback

Once the teambuilding exercise is over, you need to ask everyone how they felt about it. Tell them to be honest about their experiences and what they feel they learned. Be sure to gather feedback on and what they think management needs to do the next time to improve the activity.
