Giro d’Italia 2019, stage 17 – live updates

As mentioned earlier, there will be number of riders here today hoping to salvage their Giro d’Italia. As mentioned earlier, there will be number of riders here today hoping to salvage their Giro d’Italia. With the stages running out and, perhaps, the profiles not necessarily suiting their strengths, this rolling stage may be their best opportunity to win a stage. Withing this breakaway, there’s one particular name that leaps out at me: Bob Jungels.

The Deceuninck-Quick Step rider has had a disappointing race. Many had expected the Luxembourg champion to challenge for a top 10 place, but he appears to have left his legs at home. Today, though, he’s in the break with surely only the stage win on his mind.

To a lesser degree, too, is Thomas De Gendt. Obviously, the Lotto-Soudal rider helped his erstwhile team-mate Caleb Ewan win two sprint stages at this year’s race so is hardly on a salvage mission, however by his standards the Belgian domestique-cum-breakaway specialist has not really threatened to take something for himself.

CCC have had a dreadful race, so seeing Amaro Antunes and Victor De La Parte in the break would suggest they are definitely on a face-saving mission, as will be Sunweb pair Jan Bakelants and Chris Hamilton

And as for the Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec duo of Fausto Masnada and Andrea Vendame, it’s what they do, isn’t it?
