Outraged by Vettel’s manoeuvre, Hamilton reacted to his garage in a flash. “He just came straight on the track – so dangerous,” he told his race engineer. The horrified expression of Toto Wolff, his team principal, suggested that he shared the sentiment. Mercedes appealed immediately to the stewards, who soon agreed that Vettel had acted recklessly by re-entering the track in the manner he did.

Their imposition of a five-second penalty, though, was received furiously in the Ferrari cockpit. “I had nowhere to go,” he protested, amid futile pleas by his support team to stay calm. For the 22 laps that remained, Vettel seethed at the perceived injustice of it all.

Crossing the line fully aware that Hamilton had snatched the win, and that his remarks were being broadcast to millions, he erupted furiously at the decision. “No, no, no, not like that,” he shouted. “You need to be an absolute blind man not to see that I couldn’t do anything.”

Vettel was still not finished, refusing to stop for the usual post-race interviews and instead bounding straight up to the stewards’ office to continue his rant. If any people imagined that their explanation would placate him, they would be sorely mistaken.
