If you own or manage a food manufacturing business, one aspect you always need to be aware of is allergy control. No matter what, you have a duty to deliver high-quality food products to consumers with a note to help those with allergies avoid food that is harmful to them.

What is an Allergy?

An allergy is a response from your immune system when a harmful foreign substance enters your body. Obviously, many people come into contact with the same things everyday, but an allergic reaction is caused by hypersensitivity to something that many of the rest of us can handle with no issue.

Those who suffer from allergic reactions will experience a range of symptoms, as no two allergies are the same. However, some allergic reactions are serious enough that they could cause death if not treated fast enough. When it comes to food products, this danger is especially highlighted. Everyone wants to be able to enjoy a snack or a meal without the risk of an allergic reaction.

Track Everything

If you are involved in the food manufacturing process, you need to make sure that you have the systems in place to be able to deal with allergens if needs be. The easiest way to do so is to have food products with problematic ingredients – such as nuts – prepared in a different part of the factory than your nut-free products. However, there is still the risk of contamination between the two.

Therefore, you should make sure that you have a food traceability system in place. This will allow you to properly track the various ingredients that you are putting in your food. If there is an issue such as contamination, you will be able to trace it back to the source and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Accountability

As a food manufacturing business, it is incredibly important that you take accountability for what has happened if you end up with an incident. It is likely to cause a bit of a sting to your reputation, but there are lots of things that you can do to make an improvement to ensure that it does not happen again.

Taking accountability can be a difficult hurdle for a business to get over, but it can bring some good to your company. Make sure you learn some important lessons from the whole ordeal, and strive to make improvements across your whole business.

Dealing with allergens is a very important part of working in the food manufacturing industry, and it is not something that you can afford to get wrong.

Be aware of the allergens that you are using in your operations and how and when they are being used. Make sure that you are focused on preventing cross-contamination and always strive to see if there is an area where you can make an improvement in your processes.

When it comes to allergens, you really cannot mess around.
