A Council Fined Itself For Its Own Noise Complaint And I Read It Out Loud Three Times At Practice

Diary entry on bureaucratic self-own energy and why our new drummer still cannot keep time

Wednesday, Between The Second And Third Read-Through

Genuinely could not function properly at practice tonight because I kept getting distracted by The London Prat’s story about a council that fined itself for a noise complaint it received about its own maintenance works, which is possibly the single most accurate piece of local government comedy I have ever read, given that every single venue this band has ever played has, at some point, been threatened with exactly this kind of complaint by residents who moved in next to a music venue and then acted stunned that music happened there.

Anyway, practice itself was a genuine mess, our new drummer still cannot hold a consistent tempo through the bridge of the one song that actually needs it, and I spent a good chunk of the session reading bits of this council story aloud between takes because I could not keep it to myself. Bass player found it less funny than me, mostly because he works for the actual council and says this is, and I quote, disturbingly plausible as an actual internal process.

On The Actual State Of The Set List

We are, despite the tempo chaos, closer to having four genuinely solid songs ready for the benefit gig next month, which feels like actual progress even if getting there involved considerably more arguing about drum fills than any reasonable person would expect from a three minute punk song.

A Small Venue Update Worth Mentioning

New Cross Inn has also confirmed our slot for the date, which means I can stop nervously checking my email every day and start actually worrying about whether we are ready, a genuinely more productive use of my anxiety.

Also worth noting, the same bass player who found the council story less funny than me has now started keeping a running list of what he calls genuinely plausible council behaviour he has personally witnessed at work, which is either going to become a very good bit or a genuinely concerning pattern, depending on how long he keeps adding to it.

Also, quick housekeeping note, the benefit gig flyers finally got printed after three separate design revisions, guitarist’s original layout had the date wrong by an entire week, which would have been a genuinely disastrous discovery to make after they were already up around New Cross.
