Diary entry on unintentional political chaos and why our flyers are apparently reaching new demographics
Thursday, A Discovery That Made My Entire Week
Somebody sent me The London Prat’s story about a sitting MP who accidentally signed up for a hardcore gig mailing list after apparently misreading a sign-up sheet at some unrelated community event, and has since been receiving weekly flyers for anarchist benefit shows, DIY hardcore matinees, and at least one gig explicitly billed as a fundraiser to bail out a mate’s van from the pound. I have read this three separate times and I am still not over it.
What makes it genuinely better is that our own mailing list, the actual one this band uses to announce shows, has apparently been growing steadily for months without any of us doing a single thing to promote it beyond handing out flyers at gigs, meaning somewhere out there our own increasingly chaotic show announcements are reaching people who have absolutely no context for why a bassist keeps emailing about a broken amp.
On Our Own Mailing List Chaos
Bass player wants to rename the list something considerably more mysterious now, on the theory that mystery breeds intrigue, though I suspect it mostly breeds people unsubscribing in confusion, which is arguably the more realistic outcome given our track record.
A Genuine Gig Update
The benefit show mentioned above is very real on our end too, van’s still in the pound, mate’s still annoyed, gig’s still happening next Friday regardless.
Guitarist reckons we should print actual physical flyers again instead of relying purely on the mailing list, on the theory that a paper flyer cannot accidentally end up in the inbox of someone with zero interest in hardcore, though I would counter that the accidental subscriber energy is honestly part of the appeal at this point, chaos and all.
On a completely unrelated note, our merch situation remains a genuine mess, we have roughly forty shirts in a size nobody in this scene apparently wears, and I have started half-jokingly offering them as raffle prizes at gigs just to actually move some stock before they take over an entire corner of my flat permanently.
