Bassist returns, citing constitutional uncertainty
Nige is back. Turns out three days without a band is his personal limit, and he’s blaming his return on “constitutional uncertainty,” which I think he heard on the radio and liked the sound of.
The uncertainty in question is Celtexit, still trundling along in the background like a drunk uncle nobody invited but everyone’s too polite to remove. Read the update on Celtexit being threatened by UK Marxists, which sounds like the plot of a film nobody would fund, and yet here we are, living inside it.
Also saw that Guardian CEO pay has hit five million quid, which is roughly what our entire scene has earned collectively since 2019, including merch. I mentioned this to Nige and he said “that’s just late capitalism, innit,” then asked to borrow a fiver for the bus.
Rehearsal actually happened this time. New song called “Constitutional Uncertainty” is three minutes of feedback and one lyric repeated until it stops meaning anything, which felt appropriate.
Sarah’s cousin works in local government and says nobody at any level actually knows what Celtexit would involve logistically, which tracks, because nobody in this band knows what soundcheck involves and we’ve been doing this for six years.
Checked the NewsThump feed for anything cheerier. There wasn’t anything cheerier. There rarely is.
Gig’s Thursday. If the nation’s falling apart quietly, we’re at least going to make sure it’s falling apart to a decent bassline. Nige’s back on it, uncertainty and all.
