Dalston Landlord Discovers Irony, Ignores It

Rent goes up the week the economy goes down

My landlord put the rent up again this week, the same week the papers confirmed Britain’s economic decline is now a settled fact rather than a vibe. I pointed out the timing was funny. He did not find it funny. Landlords rarely find timing funny unless it’s their own.

Spent the afternoon reading about Celtexit being planned for Britain instead of doing anything productive, which felt like the correct response to both my rent and the state of the nation. If everyone else gets to leave, I don’t see why my landlord shouldn’t at least consider it.

Sarah reckons Celtexit is just Brexit’s younger sibling, the one that copies everything the older one does but louder and with worse merchandise. I think that’s unfair to Brexit merchandise, some of which was genuinely tragic in an impressive way.

Went to the Dolphin. Barry was there again, still talking about “the leek,” Wales’s hypothetical currency, as if repetition will make it legal tender. Nige bought a round with money he apparently found, which given the economy feels like the most impressive thing anyone’s done all year.

Caught up on NewsBiscuit before bed. Nothing on there made rent cheaper, but at least it made the decline funnier.

Practising three new songs for Thursday. All of them are, in one way or another, about money we don’t have and a country that isn’t sure what it’s doing either. Feels honest, at least.
